Choir And Band
St. Mary’s CBS has a long and proud tradition of music, song and drama. Our choir has been up and running for several years with Jilly Powell as musical director and Fidelma Collins as accompanist. The choir consists of boys from 3rd to 6th class who audition for places in September. They sing regularly in St. Mary’s church for the Communion programme masses, and every year they accompany the Holy Communion or Penance services. They have sung at various concerts and charity events and were privileged to sing with The Three Tenors at the Clonmel Park hotel in 2015. In May 2023 the choir performed in our school musical ‘The Greatest Show’. This was a huge production with over 3000 people getting to see the show which took place in Fossetts Circus Tent over three days. Preparations are already afoot to produce another musical theatre extravaganza – in May 2025. This promises to be one to look forward to.In December 2023 they were one of the proud winners of RTE Lyric FM’s “Schools for Christmas” competition, a fantastic accomplishment for the boys and their teachers. Christmas is always a busy time for the choir, singing in town or for our elderly neighbours at the Day Care Centre and Cottage Hospital. For the last few years the boys have been a popular item at St. Mary’s carol service, livening up the Christmas
markets at the Plaza and the annual performance for the staff of Boston Scientific. This year the choir was selected to perform at the Peace Proms Cross Border Concert in SETU, Waterford in January 2025. The boys are enjoying attending rehearsals and will join forces with the 100 - member internationally acclaimed Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. Under the direction of celebrated conductor Greg Beardsell and led by violinist Richie Dunne, the concerts promise to be an unforgettable celebration of youth, music and talent on an epic scale. We can't wait to cheer them on. |
